By some random act of fate, we were given a hot tub that was left behind when somebody moved out of our development recently. The tub was used and missing parts. Our journey to restoration is outlined below.
Day 1 (2/15/03)
Our first task was to bring the tub home. This required the rental of a Ford Ranger pickup and the bribing of 1 South African and 2 Britts. After some good old fashioned elbow grease we had the tub in our yard.
Day 2 (2/17/03)
We ventured to the hardware store to pick up many many supplies, including tons of pipes and fittings. We also managed to get our hands on a temporary pump to test the whole system out. Jamie spent most of this evening repairing some broken plumbing due to a bad jet, whilst I spent my evening creating legs for the tub that we later decided against using for the time being. Initial overview after day 2. Luckily for this day, we managed to get ahold of a circular saw to cut the wood. My neighbors must love the sound of that SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAACH at 2 am :).
Day 3 (2/19/03)
We ventured to the hardware store again to gather more fittings and couplers as we had miscalculated the first time. We also purchased more lumber to construct better legs that will not be wobbly.
Day 4 (2/20/03)
Today was a big day for the project. We modified the plumbing a little bit and hooked up the temporary pump. No heater right now, just a cold tub. We also created a more stable frame and filled the puppy up with water. There was some creaking as we poured 450 gallons of water into the tub, but we suspect that it was the wood settling. We discovered only a few minor leaks with the plumbing (nothing we did, of course). The tub itself seems fine! Our next task was to test out the plumbing by turning on the jets. Jamie and Myself next to our creation. Overview for the day.
